Interesting article in today's West Australian paper. 'Teens want to be taught more about life skills' that will benefit them in the real world. Wow! Life skills are the core of traditional martial arts like aikido and are what we have been teaching our students and have built a reputation on at West Coast Aikido Martial Arts Academy for more than 25 years. Developing positive life skills such as honesty, integrity, awareness, focus, respect, courtesy, better communication and there are many more, definitely helps teens in so many different ways and especially when looking for employment or making new friends. I have seen first hand how through our instruction, focusing on getting our students to demonstrate these core values in every part of their life, has seen students confidence grow and their ability to communicate improve as they mature into adulthood. There is no doubt that now more than ever children and teens and even some adults, require more work on developing these valuable life skills. If you know of anyone or any schools in your area who could benefit from this type of training please feel free to give them our contact details and we would be more than happy to help. ...

To Stay or Go.
At this time every year I always worry that we will lose some of our students. People start to think about the holidays and prepare for the New Year; losing focus.

It is unfortunate but I know we will lose students for many different reasons. Sometimes it is due to legitimate circumstances such as moving out of town, or illness or they may have been laid off from their job. We realise that these things do happen and are unfortunately unavoidable.

But when students quit their training because they are bored or they want to try something new, or they feel they are not making progress fast enough, or any one of a dozen others reasons, then I believe we need to examine these reasons more closely.

Training in a martial art like Aikido is very different to participating in many other activities that are available to us. We can train at the gym, go for a run, or take a swim at the beach. These activities are fine and can give you some form of enjoyment, for a fleeting moment, but they will not give you the depth of mental and physical stimulation that training in Aikido can give you. Why do I say this? Because I have experienced all of the above and still do some of these activities. But they are not what I would call a 'way of life'. Aikido is 'my' way of life because I know, from experience, that every aspect of my training can be applied to my everyday life. In other words, no matter what I am doing whether I am driving, gardening, cleaning the dojo, or writing this article, I am applying the Aikido principles of peace, harmony and blending, to my every thought and action. The bottom line is that the principles that we teach on the mats can be used to improve our quality of life in so many different ways.

But I am just as sure that aside from the physical benefits such as greater fitness and self defence skills, which we know are extremely important, the practice of Aikido develops in you greater patience, resilience and self respect. Off the top of my head I would say that Aikido has taught me more about awareness, mental control, leadership, goal setting, problem solving, completing tasks, being a good role model, honesty, modesty, manners, courtesy, focus, perseverance, teamwork and giving 100% effort, than I have experienced or learned from any other activity.

I write this to remind you that when you joined our school you joined a special group of people who do not quit easily and who commit to completing what they started.

I, my instructors and my staff are here to help you achieve your goals and reach the coveted Black Belt and to go beyond. We are not in the business of helping you quit. In fact, we will not make it easy for you to quit because we are dedicated to your success and want you to remain part of our West Coast Aikido Family.

Please consider this.

Yours in aiki

Reactive or Pro active?

Like our aikido training, life is not always smooth sailing, sunshine and lolipops. Our daily interactions with people can be similar to taking ukemi (falling) in training. When things go well and you get your own way it can be much like performing the perfect throw, or fall, in aikido. You execute great timing and perfect off-balancing skills to create the perfect storm enabling you to deliver the technique successfully. On the other hand, when your day is not going so well and things seem like they are going against you, you can feel much like the uke, or taker of the fall, who when thrown hard to the mats, feels unsafe and out of control of the situation.

As much as we all would like to have every day run smoothly and without conflict, life is not like that. In life you will always have feelings of being the uke, metaphorically taking the fall and feeling the pain of being thrown or rejected.

The true test is how we react to these awkward and sometimes painful situations. Our reactions to these situations, as hard as they are to deal with, are very important, especially as martial artists. We are judged by our actions and if our habit is to always react negatively to adverse situations then we are not living the life of a true martial artist. If we get mad (at ourselves or others) every time we are thrown down or something bad happens then we lose control of the situation.

On the flip side, if we have control over our emotions and take the knock or fall as a lesson, we can be more proactive with our reactions and turn a negative into a positive. That is why we learn how to fall (ukemi) safely in aikido so that no matter how we are thrown we have the confidence to regain our composure and get ready for what is to come next. Ukemi is therefore a great equalisor and a way to develop great character and resilience. Happy falling

This Saturday I will be conducting a well overdue course on Pressure Points. As some of you may know we utilise joint manipulation and strikes in aikido, but unfortunately you may not be aware of how we can make joint locks and strikes much more effective. This is why I want to share my knowledge of Pressure Points with you. It is not something that I give out freely and I must stress that what you will learn is of a much higher and potentially dangerous level of instruction, so the greatest care must be taken when applying such techniques. However, the knowledge you will gain will greatly benefit your aikido and general self defence. A warning though...what you will learn will be practical and easily adaptable to the techniques you already know. Regardless of rank you will come away from this seminar with more confidence in your abilities to defend yourself. Please take the time to sign up at the front desk and be prepared for a fun day of learning. Thankyou for your support and I look forward to seeing you on Saturday. Parents,

Your job is not to protect your kids, your job is to make sure they can protect themselves.

Your job isn’t to be responsible for your kids, your job is to teach them responsibility.

Your job isn’t to provide for your kids, your job is to prepare them to provide for themselves by teaching them a work ethic.

Your job isn’t to respect their choices, your job is to instill the discipline to make the right choices when you aren’t around to choose for them.

Your job is not to coddle them but to teach them to respect others.

Think to their futures not their present.

A martial arts instructor should not only be a coach but one who is there to guide students in the ways and traditions of budo. He/she should be just as proficient and comfortable communicating with students (and parents) as with teaching the physical skills of their art. A great teacher should be able to weave the philosophy, history and skills of their art into every class that they teach. This is what separates the average from the exceptional and helps develop well rounded students who understand their role in promoting the traditional Martial Arts. ...
