What is Aikido?

Aikido (way of harmony) is a martial art developed in Japan in 1942 by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 – 1969).O'Sensei

Ueshiba trained for many years in a number combat systems including aikijujitsu, sword, spear and staff.

Combining his technical skills with a strong spiritual base, Ueshiba developed an extremely effective form of self-defence and personal development that is practiced daily by thousands of people throughout the world.

What Does Aikido Mean?

The first character, "Ai", means to "meet, join or harmonise". The second character, "Ki" means "mind, soul or spirit". Ki refers to the spirit of the universe.

The final character, "Do" means "the way". Meaning a way or path toward a more conscious life, a life of true meaning and committment.

Combined the three characters "AI-KI-DO" mean "the way of harmony".

How Does Aikido Work?

Aikido’s principles of harmony and non-resistance combine with linear and circular footwork to off-balance an attacker and apply joint locking or throwing techniques.

Aikido can be used against any form of physical attack and in any situation. Aikido is also a great way to improve your physical fitness and its philosophy of harmony can help to reduce the stress of modern living.

What Can Aikido Do For Me?

Self-defence: Potentially dangerous attacks can occur anywhere and at any time. At the very least, Aikido can provide you with the necessary mental and physical attributes that will enable you to confidently deal with an attack, (be it physical or verbal), and survive.

Physical exercise: Aikido’s continuous body movement, joint locks and throwing techniques can significantly improve your strength, cardiovascular fitness and overall flexibility. Aikido can be practiced by people of all ages. Participants have often reported a significant improvement in fitness and mental alertness after just a few months of training.

Traditional martial art: People are drawn to Aikido because of its graceful movement and practical application of technique. However, just as importantly Aikido provides a way to achieve more self-discipline and focus in our lives therefore helping to reduce stress, developing an individual who is more relaxed and confident in any environment.

Can I Do Aikido?

Yes. People of all ages practice Aikido the world over. Some of the best exponents of the art are advanced in age. Aikido training can vary, from light and flowing technique to more hard and vigorous training depending on your level of fitness and ability. However, training in Aikido can be tailored to suit your age, physical abilities or work environment.
