Grading requirements
Ranking System
Most martial arts schools have a belt or rank system and Aikido is no different. There are a number of reasons why it is essential to have a belt or grading system:
- To measure your progress and abilities in Aikido
- To set goals and to instill a desire to achieve even higher goals
- To learn cooperation and organisation
- To learn how to express yourself
- To build self-confidence
In order to advance through the ranks you must train consistently and adhere to the correct rules and regulations of the Academy. The goal of every student should be to at least attain the rank of Shodan (first degree black belt) and then review whether they wish to continue with their training.
Informal testing is done by monitoring students progress in each class. Formal kyu or lower rank gradings are held every three months and each student is graded on his/her own potential depending on prior training, age, disability, etc.
If you are consistent with your training and attend the majority of classes that are available, then you will achieve your desired results and eventually the coveted Black Belt. It is all up to you!
