What is Aikido?

Known as "the way of harmony", aikido is a modern Japanese martial art developed by Master Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969).

What makes aikido unique is its emphasis on technical skill rather than brute strength and aggression. Students learn circular movements that are designed to blend with the attacker and utilise their energy to escape an attack, apply joint locks or throw the attacker to the ground.

How can aikido help your child?

Your child will not only learn a very powerful and thoughtful method of self defence, but also a set of values and attributes that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Guided by our experienced instructors, aikido will benefit your child in the following ways:

  • Physically - Aikido will give your child the advantage in all their physical activities. Through aikido movement and technique your child will develop better physical conditioning, coordination, flexibility, timing, relaxation, visualisation, kinaesthetic awareness and also have great fun.
  • Emotionally - Unfortunately due to our fast paced life the modern world has become more stressful. However, aikido's philosophy of harmony and patience will teach your child to be more calm, controlled and focussed in any situation whether at home, in school or socially.
  • Socially - In our class children are taught to respect their training partner and their instructors. They are taught the value of cooperation and to ask questions. In this way they learn the art of communication, which helps them to be more sociable and of course teaches them another way to make friends and resolve conflict.

Is your child old enough?

If your child is between 7 and 12 years of age they can join the class.
